The girl in this work appeared previously in a drawing, an oil painting, and two watercolors. More generally, she is related to the manysolitary figures of womenthat appear in Homer’s work, especially during the 1870s, including A Sick ChickenandFresh Eggs. In 1873 Homer spent his summer in Gloucester, Massachusetts, which is where he painted The Boat Builders, as well as other works in his series of drawings and paintings about shipbuilding. The connection of the boys' toy boats and the sailing ship was sought to intertwine the imagination of the boys with the real-life experience of fishermen. It is believed that the boys' hobby suggests their future role in the ship, sea and fishing industries.
Homer had almost always set up an emphatic juxtaposition between therole of womenon the shore and that of the men on the sea. As the women determinedly went about their own business, confronted with theinexorable prospect of separation and loss,the men faced tangible physical peril in their constant battle with the elements. In the paintings of the 1880s, Homer occasionally merged the two themes.
The Boat Builders, 1873
In the October 11, 1873 issue of Harper's Weekly the painting appeared as an engraving. You still have to stand in a queue with people who haven't bought a ticket and also to get better seats in the boat. Take your time to explore the area between Niederwald monument and the chair lift. The suggested walking time of 45 minutes seems a bit short to me if you also wanted to branch-off the straightest route to some view points like Rossel. Should you be there on a weekend you may want to check-out the falconry next to the monument. And a brandnew visitor center is about to open up there which should also be worth some time.
He exhibited at the National Academy of Design in 1860 and was elected a member in 1865. During a stay in France in 1866, he was attracted to French naturalism and Japanese prints, but they had little effect on his generally bright and happy work. He became a master of watercolour and his ability as an oil painter matured; he focused increasingly on solitary, withdrawn figures. He spent 1881 – 82 in the English village of Tynemouth, on the North Sea, where the coastal atmosphere, the sea, and the stoic people are the subjects of some of his most powerful images. In 1883 he moved permanently to Prouts Neck, and his dominant theme became the sea and the endless struggle against an uncaring nature. In his later years he continued to paint vigorously and in near-total isolation.
About the Artist
The model was a local woman named Ida Meserve Harding, who had earlier posed for him. Something has caught the woman's attention, causing her to stop midstride and look back over her shoulder—perhaps a sound raised by whatever has caused the gull to rise from its roost and soar away. Suggesting that the viewer, too, follow her glance, Homer makes the picture’s narrative focus a point just beyond the right edge of the scene. Homer revisited the theme of two women mending fishing nets, seen in his 1882 watercolor, in this 1888 etching.
Homer drew upon his experience of the war to create his first oil paintings, many of them scenes of camp life that illuminate the physical and psychological plight of ordinary soldiers. He received national acclaim for these early works, both for the strength of his technique and the candor of his subjects. From the late 1850s until his death in 1910, Winslow Homer produced a body of work distinguished by its thoughtful expression and its independence from artistic conventions.

He eliminated the wall and placed the figures near the sea, with a ship visible in the distance. For a short period in the late 1870s, a decorative quality became evident in Homer’s art. Blackboard, which continues the theme of elementary education found in many of his oils, epitomizes this development.
In the 1870s, Homer depicted a variety of subjects, but his favorite themes were rural settings that included children playing in the out-of-doors. He recorded them in a realistic manner, without the sentimentality that was so prevalent in the work of his contemporaries. Homer’s early works, while mainly set outdoors, are almost all figure paintings. This was a conspicuous departure from the type of pure landscape that dominated 19th-century American art. Homer spent the summer of 1873 in Gloucester, Massachusetts, where he painted this family of a fisherman awaiting his return. The exuberance suggested by the title—first given when an engraving of the painting was published in Harper’s Weekly in 1873—is tempered by the meditative air of the still, silhouetted figures.
Though he was recognized in his lifetime as a leading U.S. painter, appreciation of his enormous achievement came only after his death. The themes of childhood and shipbuilding appear together in several of Homer's Gloucester subjects. Whether working in pencil, watercolor, oil or even print making, Homer's fascination with daily life in the coastal town is evident. As an example, Homer has placed the boys and their toy sailboats in the foreground of the composition for an engraving he completed for the October 11, 1873 issue of Harper's Weekly. The size of The Milk Maid and its highly finished state suggest that Homer was attempting to create what English artists called “exhibition watercolors”—works that were intended to rival the aesthetic power and impact of oil paintings.
The title refers to the song frequently played by the Union regimental band, a piece that no doubt inspired homesickness and longing in the infantry men who listened to it. But the title also refers to the soldiers’ present “home,” shown with all its domestic details—a small pot on a smoky fire,hard biscuits on a tin plate—that Homer, who did the cooking and washing when he was on the front, knew intimately. Homer generally preferred the blue skies and white clouds typical of the island’s climate. Only occasionally, as in the remarkableThe Coming Storm, did he portray ominous weather. Homer traveled to Nassau in the winter of 1884–1885 at the request ofCentury Magazine, which commissioned illustrations for an article on the popular tourist destination. There Homer executed more than 30 watercolors whose subjects are representative of the scenery of the island and lives of its citizens; however, his greater interest was in capturing the light and atmosphere of the region. Homer returned to New York in 1882 and faced the challenge of finding a theme as compelling as that which had occupied him in Cullercoats.
Artists have long used rock symbolism to convey the ancient roots of the human mind.5 Homer, who loved the rocky shoreline of New England, was no exception. In March 1881, Homer sailed from New York to England, where he spent 20 months in the small fishing village of Cullercoats on the North Sea. Numerous preliminary studies and thecareful planningevident in these works reflect his aspiration to construct a more classical, stable art of seriousness and gravity. This picture, exhibited in New York in 1863, was enthusiastically admired and quickly sold.
The studied elegance of the work’s design derives in part from its monochromatic palette and in part from the geometric patterning found in the bands of color in the background, the checkered apron, and the marks on the board. The whole boat trip was good, the weather was nice and it was a great relaxation tour. Though there are few things that could be improved - smoking should be allowed at one particular place as non-smoking passengers are not comfortable with smokers freely lightning a cigarette in the crowded boat upstairs. The guiding in English was not loud enough and it was after German guiding tips - meaning that we already passed that particular place and it was uneasy to understand about which building is the guide speaking about.
